Santa Ana’s Planning Commission has recommended the approval of the City’s comprehensive Zoning Code Update. The recommendation was made on August 31, marking a significant step in modernizing the city’s development regulations. The existing Zoning Code was last updated in the 1960s, making the current overhaul a critical effort to align property use and development standards with Santa Ana’s contemporary vision.

The comprehensive update is designed to reflect the community's vision as established when the City's General Plan was adopted in 2022. Zoning defines how property may be used and developed over time, guiding future construction and land use decisions across Santa Ana. This update aims to ensure that the city’s regulations are current and effective in addressing present and future development needs.

While the Planning Commission has advanced the draft Zoning Code Update, a public hearing before the Santa Ana City Council has not yet been scheduled. However, the City Council may begin to consider the proposed update as early as October. Residents, businesses, and property owners will continue to have opportunities to ask questions and provide feedback on the changes, both before and during the hearing process. The Mayor encouraged the public to engage with the update and share their input.

In other municipal developments, the City of Santa Ana has established a dedicated Public Works Helpline to enhance customer service. Residents can now call 714-647-3380 for questions regarding Public Works projects, services, requirements, or requests. This initiative is part of the Public Works department's ongoing efforts to strengthen its responsiveness and support to the community.

The city is also supporting prospective homeowners through its "My First Home" program. An information session is scheduled for September 10, designed to inform residents about the first-time homebuyer program. Attendees will learn about eligibility requirements, the application process, and frequently asked questions related to purchasing their first home in Santa Ana. This program aims to facilitate homeownership for qualified residents within the city.

Separately, La Colmena, a local organization, received recognition at a recent Santa Ana City Council meeting. The group was honored for its work in fostering urban farming, entrepreneurship, and cultural connection. La Colmena achieves these goals through shared land trust values, contributing to community development and local economic activity.

The Santa Ana Police Department (SAPD) demonstrated new technology at a monthly Neighborhood Association meeting, showcasing the capabilities of its drone program. The demonstration, which included a live call scenario, reportedly received positive feedback. According to reports, the drone proved to be an efficient tool, assisting officers by providing aerial perspectives in areas previously difficult to access. In the live demonstration, the drone located a fallen person in less than a minute, highlighting its potential to enhance response times for emergency services.

Looking back at the past year's progress, the Mayor, along with the City Manager and Chief of Police, presented on "Leadership Delivered" at the State of the City event. The event, which saw an attendance of 450 individuals from various sectors including business, non-profits, community groups, youth organizations, and faith-based initiatives, highlighted city improvements, construction achievements, and cleanliness efforts over the preceding year. The Mayor expressed optimism for future developments, emphasizing community strength through collaboration.

Further community engagement was seen at an event hosted by the Santa Ana Elks Lodge, which brought together 61 exhibitors to provide free services to hundreds of families. Despite warm weather conditions, the event offered a range of support, including music, cultural dances, haircuts for children in preparation for the school year, and essential eye and dental examinations. This initiative underscored the importance of school readiness for student success.

The city also continues to host various cultural and community events. September will feature the Fiestas Patrias celebration on the 12th and 13th in Downtown Santa Ana. This free, two-day event will commemorate Mexican independence with live entertainment, food and vendor stalls, carnival rides, cultural exhibits, the traditional El Grito ceremony, and an annual parade. Additionally, the Bowers Museum will host the Asian Mid-Autumn Festival on Sunday, September 13, featuring live performances, art activities, face painting, and complimentary treats.

These initiatives and ongoing planning efforts reflect Santa Ana's continued focus on both civic infrastructure and community welfare as it plans for future growth and development. The comprehensive Zoning Code Update remains a central piece of this long-term strategy, promising to shape how Santa Ana evolves in the decades to come.
