Sal's Pizzeria is proposing a second location in Mission Viejo, with a restaurant project identified at 27680 Marguerite Parkway, Suite A. The proposal surfaced in an Orange County plan-review filing, according to WhatNow, and is currently moving through the county’s review process.
At present, no opening date has been confirmed for the new site. The report from WhatNow does not specify the current stage of the review process or offer a timeline for construction. Further details, including whether the new location will offer services such as pickup, delivery, catering, or online ordering, are not yet available.
The project is subject to the Orange County Food Facility Plan Check & Construction program. This program, administered by the Orange County Health Care Agency, reviews plans for all new and remodeled food facilities within the county to ensure compliance with applicable requirements.
Sal's Pizzeria was founded by Matt Darienzo and named after his father-in-law, Sal, who had a long career distributing Italian food products. The company's website indicates Sal distributed Italian food products for over 50 years. Sal's Pizzeria currently operates an existing location on the second floor of the Kaleidoscope Mall in Mission Viejo, next to the Regal Edwards theater, which opened in October 2020 and specializes in New York- and Sicilian-style pizzas. The company has also expanded with a third location in The District at Tustin. A Foothill Ranch location was operational by July 2019.
The core of the Sal's Pizzeria menu features three main pizza styles: New York, Sicilian, and Grandma. New York-style pizzas are described by the company as having thin crusts, while Sicilian pies feature thicker crusts with traditional red sauce. The Grandma pie is characterized as having a thick crust with a secret sauce, according to the company, or as a square-cut pie with a medium crust and sauce placed over the cheese, as described by WhatNow; both accounts note it includes breadcrumbs and onions.
The pizzeria’s preparation emphasizes made-from-scratch dough that proofs overnight, and sauces crafted in-house using California tomatoes and fresh ingredients. Beyond pizza, the menu extends to pasta, sandwiches, salads, garlic knots, and other Italian dishes. Catering services and online ordering are listed among the company's offerings, and existing locations provide pickup and delivery options.
Mission Viejo residents await further information regarding the timeline and specific offerings of the proposed Marguerite Parkway location as it continues through the county’s plan-review process.
