Voice of OC reported that the Irvine City Council voted to ban synthetic kratom products within city limits. Following a 5-2 vote on Oct. 13 with council members Mike Carroll and James Mai dissenting, the council gave final unanimous approval on Oct. 27.
The ordinance prohibits products containing more than 2% of the substance 7-OH and restricts natural kratom sales to individuals ages 21 or older. Violators face a misdemeanor charge, fines up to $1,000, up to six months in jail, or the revocation of business licenses. Irvine joins approximately a dozen Orange County cities implementing similar restrictions or bans on the substance.
